Tampa Electric (TECO) restores power in Tampa. Report an outage at 877-588-1010 or text OUT to 27079, and check TECO's live outage map.
Last checked Oct. 10, 2026. Numbers come from Tampa Electric and the City of Tampa’s 2026 Hurricane Guide.
Electric service in Tampa comes from Tampa Electric, known as TECO; the city’s hurricane guide sends residents to TECO for power outages. Report outages to TECO, not City Hall. The City of Tampa handles water, sewer and trash through its own departments.

Report an outage
TECO gives three ways to report, according to the city’s hurricane guide and TECO’s site:
- Call 877-588-1010.
- Text OUT to 27079.
- Go online to TECO’s outage map, which shows outages across its service area as they happen and lets you report your own.
Check the map first to see whether your area is already shown.
Downed lines and safety
TECO’s safety page says to move a safe distance away from a downed line and always assume it is energized: some live wires spark and snap, while others may not look dangerous. The city’s hurricane guide adds:
- Do not touch a downed power line, or tree limbs or other objects touching one.
- If the power goes out while you are cooking, turn the stove off and take cookware off the stove and out of the oven.
- Keep the refrigerator and freezer closed as much as possible.
- If you smell gas, leave your home immediately and call the utility.
- Run portable generators outdoors in a well-ventilated area at least 20 feet from doors, windows and vents. Do not tie a generator into the house wiring; only a certified electrician should do that. Plug appliances directly into the generator.
Storms and long outages
In a hurricane, outages can last days or weeks, the city’s guide warns. Before the season:
- Sign up for Alert Tampa and TECO account alerts.
- If anyone at home depends on electricity for medical equipment, register for a Hillsborough County special needs shelter well ahead; call 813-307-8063. See our hurricane prep guide.
- Portable generators up to 10,000 running watts and AA to D batteries are now tax-free in Florida all year.
Water, sewer and streetlights
Some “outages” are not TECO’s:
| Problem | Call |
|---|---|
| No water or a water main break, weekdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. | City of Tampa Utilities, 813-274-8811 |
| Water emergency, nights, weekends, holidays | 813-274-7400 |
| Sewer backup (24 hours) | 813-247-3451 |
| Streetlight out | TECO streetlight form |
From the city’s water and wastewater pages.
