Two agencies close lanes in Tampa. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) runs the interstates and state roads, including I-275, I-4, Dale Mabry Highway, Kennedy Boulevard (State Road 60) and Busch Boulevard. The City of Tampa runs most other streets and now posts its closures on one.network. Most state work happens at night.

Westshore: Cypress Street and the I-275 frontage roads
FDOT’s Westshore Interchange work at I-275 and SR 60 has these closures in place around the clock:
- Cypress Street, West Frontage Road to East Frontage Road: westbound traffic shifts and diversions through Friday, Nov. 13.
- Frontage Road, Cypress Street to Cypress Center Drive: one lane closed through late 2026.
- Frontage Road, Cypress Street to Lemon Street: closed to traffic through January 2027.
FL511 also lists nightly lane closures on I-275 in both directions from near the Howard Frankland Bridge to east of Lois Avenue, and on SR 60 from I-275 to north of Spruce Street, Sunday through Thursday nights through Jan. 29, 2027. Project page.
The big state projects
From FDOT’s current project list:
- Downtown Tampa Interchange (I-275/I-4). A $227.5 million rebuild of the downtown interchange, under way since fall 2023 and due in spring 2027. It adds a two-lane exit and a new ramp bridge from southbound I-275 to eastbound I-4, and moves the eastbound I-4 exit to Ybor City from 21st and 22nd streets to 14th and 15th streets. Project page.
- I-4 eastbound auxiliary lane, 15th Street to 26th Street. A $10.7 million, 0.7-mile added lane starting this fall, due late 2027. Project page.
- Howard Frankland Bridge (I-275). The new southbound bridge opened in 2025, and the express lanes across Old Tampa Bay opened this year. Since Aug. 22, 2026, those express lanes are tolled through SunPass at all hours, and the bridge speed limit is 65 mph, with 55 mph work zones at either end. A 12-foot shared-use path for walkers and cyclists runs along the north side of the bridge, sunrise to sunset, reached from the south end of Reo Street in Tampa. Project page.
- Busch Boulevard (SR 580), Dale Mabry Highway to Nebraska Avenue. A $12.8 million, 3.7-mile corridor and safety project starting in early 2027, due late 2027. Project page.
- Henry Canal drainage, Anderson Road to Hesperides Street. Under construction since Aug. 4, 2026, due summer 2027. Project page.
Coming later
These are in design. FDOT has not set closures yet:
- Scott Street interchange, Morgan Street to Jefferson Street: wider on-ramps to northbound I-275 and eastbound I-4, repaving, new signals and sidewalks.
- I-275 northbound exit to Scott Street: two right-turn lanes to southbound Tampa Street and a new signal, with construction expected in fall 2027.
- Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard (SR 574) repaving, Dale Mabry Highway to Nebraska Avenue, 3.29 miles, with construction expected in fall 2028.
- Adamo Drive (SR 60) repaving, east of 22nd Street to east of U.S. 41.
- I-275 repaving, south of Nebraska Avenue to the Pasco County line.
Downtown: South Tampa Street closed for two years
Since 8 p.m. Oct. 20, South Tampa Street has been closed at East Brorein Street. The closure lasts about two years while crews build support pillars for the wider Lee Roy Selmon Expressway. Drivers are detoured onto a converted eastbound lane on East Brorein Street toward Franklin Street, and Brorein’s leftmost lane is closed between South Morgan Street and South Florida Avenue. The convention center garage and upper loading docks stay open. Questions go to the Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority at 813-659-6140 or info@southselmoncapacity.com. Read our story on the closure and detour, from the city’s Oct. 13 release.
City street closures
The City of Tampa moved all its road closure and traffic updates to one.network. Create a free account to see the map and set an email alert for the streets you use. The city still posts event traffic advisories, such as parade and convention closures downtown, on its news page. City construction projects, with phase and expected dates, are on the CIP Viewer.
What this means for you
- Downtown-bound drivers on southbound I-275 or westbound I-4 after 10 p.m. through Thursday should plan on the Exit 46A or 46B detour to Tampa Street.
- Night drivers on Kennedy Boulevard, Hillsborough Avenue, Adamo Drive, the 22nd Street Causeway and I-4 east of downtown should expect lane closures this week.
- In Westshore, the Frontage Road between Cypress and Lemon streets stays closed into January.
- Downtown I-275/I-4 ramps keep changing until spring 2027; follow the signs, not memory.
- The Howard Frankland express lanes need a SunPass; the regular lanes do not.
- Sign up for FDOT’s Hillsborough email alerts and a one.network alert for your route.
