Tens of thousands are expected downtown Thursday to Sunday for Hyrox and a Joyce Meyer conference. Event times, the Brorein Street change and free rides.

Downtown Tampa is in for four busy days. The City of Tampa expects crowds “reaching into the tens of thousands” from Thursday through Sunday, Oct. 22-25.

The two biggest draws are the Hyrox fitness race at the Tampa Convention Center and the Joyce Meyer Ministries Women’s Conference at Benchmark International Arena. The city’s traffic advisory for Oct. 22-25 said drivers should expect heavier traffic and lots of people on foot.

Saturday is the heaviest day, with six events across the city. The city’s own calendar gives fuller hours for some of them:

Hyrox is a race that mixes running with workout stations. Its city calendar listing runs from 6 a.m. Thursday to 10 p.m. Sunday.

The new lane on Brorein Street

Drivers heading for the convention center should know about a change that started this week. Since Tuesday, Oct. 20, South Tampa Street has been closed at East Brorein Street for about two years of work on the Selmon Expressway.

The leftmost lane of East Brorein Street now carries two-way traffic. That lets drivers on South Tampa Street still reach South Franklin Street, the city said. Our story on the South Tampa Street closure at Brorein has the full detour.

What it means for you

  • If you work downtown, leave extra time Thursday and Friday. The Hyrox race and the conference overlap on both days.
  • If you are going to an event, the city suggested leaving the car. The TECO Line Streetcar is free. DASH buses, HART buses, rentable scooters and bikes also serve downtown.
  • All city-run downtown garages have free covered bike parking. Benchmark International Arena has a free bike valet for event guests, the city said.
  • Check live closures on the city’s road closures page and parking options on its parking page.
