Suggested viewing spots included Jackson’s, American Social, the Sail Pavilion, the Tampa Convention Center, Harbour Island and Davis Islands, and the organizers urged people to use the free TECO Line Streetcar (Riverwalk New Year’s Eve page). Fireworks at home
Florida allows consumer fireworks on three designated holidays: New Year’s Day, Jan. 1; Independence Day, July 4; and New Year’s Eve, Dec. 31, under Section 791.08 of state law. The law does not override a properly recorded homeowners’ association covenant that bans fireworks, though an HOA board cannot make new rules to take the right away.
Use fireworks away from homes and dry brush, keep water nearby and keep pets inside. Report injuries and fires to 911. Our Fourth of July fireworks guide covers the same law in more detail.
What is open and closed
- City of Tampa offices: closed Friday, Jan. 1, 2027, for New Year’s Day, per the city’s holiday calendar and closure notice. They are open on New Year’s Eve.
- Public schools: Hillsborough County Public Schools winter break runs Monday, Dec. 21, through Friday, Jan. 1. Monday, Jan. 4 is a non-student day; students return Tuesday, Jan. 5.
- Trash pickup: the city posts holiday changes on its solid waste collection schedule. Last year, per the city’s 2025 New Year notice, residential pickup was suspended on New Year’s Day and resumed the next day, the McKay Bay Transfer Station closed at noon on New Year’s Eve, and free curbside Christmas tree pickup began Jan. 2. We will add the 2027 change when it is posted; see our trash and recycling guide.
Getting home safely
